General Bad Breath / Halitosis Information Bad breath (halitosis) is a condition that occurs when an offensive odor is detected in the mouth. Bad breath is a common problem which affects everyone at one time or another. It typically occurs first thing in the morning, when a person is dieting or when a person is unable to brush his teeth after eating.

Possible Causes of Bad Breath / Halitosis Causes of bad breath include some foods (such as garlic, onions and meats); tobacco use; and bacteria and plaque build-up in the mouth, teeth, gums and on dental appliances. Bad breath is also common when there is decreased saliva production in the mouth. This tends to occur most often first thing in the morning; after drinking alcoholic beverages; when a person is hungry or dieting; or when a person is dehydrated. Problems in the mouth that can lead to bad breath include oral infections, dental problems, gum disease and some dental cancers. Bad breath can also point to conditions affecting other areas in the body, like nasal problems, diabetes, HIV, liver disease, digestive system dysfunction and lung problems. Bad breath can also indicated poor overall health.

Possible Symptoms of Bad Breath / Halitosis The main symptom of bad breath is an odor that usually comes from the far back region of the tongue and grows stronger when the person talks. Bad breath is often accompanied by a foul taste in the mouth. The odor can vary from barely noticeable to overwhelming depending on the cause and proximity to the person.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Bad Breath / Halitosis Practice good dental health by brushing teeth and tongue after every meal. See a dentist for a thorough tooth cleaning every six months. Drink generous amounts of water. Use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria and shed dead cells. Keep toothbrushes clean between uses and replace them monthly. Use dental floss and a chlorophyll mouthwash daily. Do not smoke. Avoid spicy foods, beer, coffee, whiskey, wine and foods that stick to and between teeth. If bad breath is associated with indigestion, try taking supplements that support healthy digestion. Chew sugar-free gum for a minute or two at a time, especially if the mouth feels dry. Chewing parsley, mint, cloves or fennel seeds may also help. If bad breath gets worse, consult a doctor.
