Bad Breath in Children

Since I’m not a pediatrician I can’t tell you these reasons are the only reasons for bad breath in children, but I can tell you they are two of the most common causes of it. As it goes with children, there are age and skill factors to be considered and addressed first. Second to that is the issue of diet and how it directly relates to halitosis, which is the more scientific term for bad breath.

Bad breath in children is usually caused by lack of good or developed hygiene skills. This is great news, since fixing this is an easy one. Children should brush for two minutes. Some parents play a child’s favorite song or come up with another way to time two minutes, so it goes by fast. You also have to ensure each tooth is individually brushed and that under the gums is brushed by holding the toothbrush at a forty-five degree angle. You have to floss and include brushing the tongue, roof of the mouth and inside of the cheeks. Nowadays you can buy a child’s mouth rinse that will highlight plaque left behind, so you can brush again and ensure you’ve gotten everything off the teeth, gums and mouth area. Kids can only do so much and accuracy comes with age, so check these dynamics and help your child with brushing practices.

The other reason for bad breath in children is diet. Namely too much sugar, which is what plaque and bacteria within the mouth feed on. If your child drinks sugar filled juices or sodas then you can, and should, immediately eliminate that. Cutting back on sugar isn’t difficult because most children have an abundant amount in their diets, which, like I said, is one cause of bad breath in children. Check your child’s diet and adjust it for optimum health and you should see bad breath disappear.
