Activated Charcoal and its Benefits for Your Dog Heres the story on activated charcoal. The charcoal powder goes through a special process when it is being manufactured, so that it will absorb a large capacity of liquids.
It has been used for over a hundred years to treat poisonings in people. For years, that was its main purpose for being used.
More recently, however, farmers have started to use activated charcoal as a regular feed additive for their livestock.
And veterinarians worldwide prescribe activated charcoal to eliminate animal odors.
Getting rid of doggie odors is one benefit of making your own charcoal dog biscuits for your dog.
How Does Activated Charcoal Work? Activated charcoal is a black powder and when ingested, it absorbs toxic substances and then speeds their elimination through the bowelspreventing the toxins from getting into the bloodstream where they could do harm.
One additional benefit is that studies have shown that activated charcoal lowers the LDL (bad cholesterol) by up to 41% and increases the HDL (good cholesterol).
So an added benefit of making dog biscuits with charcoal is to prevent heart disease in your dog.
I dont recommend using activated charcoal as a home remedy for accidental poisoning, because poisoning is serious enough that your pet needs to see a veterinarian.
However, activated charcoal is effective for other less serious conditions and it can be used at home for those. It decreases or eliminates canine flatulence, and it gets rid of simple dog bad breath.
Can the Dog Biscuits Eliminate Dog Bad Breath? Using the knowledge that activated charcoal is safe and effective for eliminating pet odors, I developed a dog biscuit recipe that can be used for bad breath in dogs.
In addition to the charcoal, the recipe includes parsley and peppermint. –two other herbs known for their breath freshening effects. And they are safe for dogs to eat!
The Big Test Does Charcoal Beat Dog Breath?
After developing the recipe, the next step was to test the effectiveness of the dog breath biscuits.
Tasting the dog treats was one thing. But, my best test was when Skipper, our miniature schnauzer puppy, found some garbage and tasted it. She smelled positively awful!
We gave her a couple of Breath Tamers and her breath was puppy-fresh again immediately! They must have settled her stomach and moved everything through her system also, because, luckily, she didnt vomit the disgusting garbage!

Dog Breath Tamers Recipe Ingredients for Breath Tamers 
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons dried peppermint or 1 1/2 teaspoons peppermint extract
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup unbleached flour
- 1/2 cup cornmeal mix
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons Activated Charcoal
- 2 tablespoons parsley
Directions
- Place all the ingredients in your bread maker in the order suggested by the manufacturer.
- Set the bread maker for the dough cycle.
- When the dough is finished, remove it and divide it into 3 portions.
- Roll each portion into a sheet that measures thick.
- Cut the cookies, using a 1 cookie cutter. You can see the shape that I used in the photo above.
- Let the charcoal dog biscuits rise for 45-60 minutes.
- Bake the biscuits at 275 degrees F for about 50-60 minutes.
- Turn off the oven and let the dog treats continue to dry for several hours or overnight. They will be hard and crisp when done.
These Breath Tamers dog treats can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container and they will keep nicely for a few months.
