Defeat Cat Bad Breath

Cat Breath Can Be Bad Breath

You love your cat. She’s cuddly and sweet, purrs just for you and blows bad breath at you. Most pet owners take foul odor from their pet’s mouth less seriously than their own bad breath because, they are, well, they’re animals. For your well being and for your cat’s you should do something about cat bad breath. It can be a result of a health problem, and if that is the case, you should have your vet check out your kitty. However, the usual cause is quite ordinary.

Cat Bad BreathMostly cat bad breath comes from the tartar build up on its teeth and from the bacteria that live there. Tartar is the coating on the teeth and it contains bacteria and food particles. These food particles are then broken down by the bacteria, that as a result of digesting the food, release sulfur compounds inside your cat’s mouth. And as we all know, sulfur emits a putrid “rotten egg” smell.

Removing your cat’s bad breath would then, obviously, entail the removal of the tartar build up and the bacteria that create the sulfur compounds in their mouth. This is easier said than done. Most cats would squirm and fight if you try to clean their mouth. Although there are a variety of special toothbrushes and toothpastes available in the market, getting your cat to stay still while you use these products would be very hard.

There are also a number of pet foods that contain enzymes that help in the removal and dissolution of the tartar. Also, there are antibacterial medications for cats which can help them eliminate the bad breath causing bacteria in their mouth. You can consult your vet about this. This is the easiest method – put an oxygenating solution in their drinking water. A capful or two of the Therabreath product called “Dr. Katz for Dogs & Cats” will keep their mouths oxygenated and the bad breath bacteria at bay. You can also use a sprayer and spritz your cat’s mouth if you are brave enough.

It is, however, easier to rather prevent cat bad breath from happening than treating it. It would be much easier that way. Start getting them oriented with oral care early and they would be more open to it as they grow up. And download and read Dr. Katz free “Dog and Cat Bad Breath Bible” for the bottom line on pet bad breath.
