Dentistry – bad smell/taste after wisdom teeth extraction Expert: Mark Bornfeld DDS – 7/23/2007
Question Hi. 10 days ago i had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed. None were impacted. They all looked upright in the radiograph. There just wasn’t room for them. I had the stitches out last saturday, and my dr. said everything looked fine. My concern is, that from my right bottom socket, i’m getting this foul odor, and rancid/bitter taste. I brush my teeth often and have been swishing with antiseptic. But even after having just cleaned my mouth, it doesn’t smell all that fresh. I brush my tongue too. But still. Also, i feel a little bit of pounding there, kind of like my heart beat. And at times i feel somewhat of sensitivity in the gums around my canine on that side. Is this normal? I don’t have the same issues on the left side, but then again, this side feels like it has healed better, it doesn’t feel tender like the right one does. On this side i got some cold sores around it, but now they are gone. My dr. said it was a reaction to the stitches, and that i would be fine. Is this true?
Thank you very much in advance for your input.
Answer Dear Brenda,
Every extraction socket is unique in some way, and it is normal for some sockets to heal faster than others. Sometimes there are longer roots, sometimes there is a need to remove more bone in order to remove a tooth, etc., so the course of healing will normally vary from extraction to extraction. As long as the socket has not completely healed over, there will be an exudate that encourages bacterial fermentation and a bad smell. This will resolve when healing of the wound has progressed further.
Unless you notice a worsening in your symptoms, you should assume that healing is progressing normally. Ulceration of the tissues such as you describe is normal, and may either be a reaction to the suture material, or simply be an inflammatory response to the surgery. This will all fade as healing is complete.
Hope this helps…
