Food Can Cause Bad Breath

Are you aware that some foods can cause bad breath, and the culprit is volatile sulfur compounds? For example, onions and garlic cause bad breath because of their molecules that are sulfur compounds.

When food is kept for too long, it will decay and give out odor; during the process, anaerobic bacteria breaks down proteins in the food by extracting sulfur compounds from amino acids in the proteins; the amino acid is turned into substances that smell like rotten eggs, or old socks and garlic.

In addition to such foods, some foods will stimulate the growth of bacteria that causes bad breath.

Drying Agents: Drying agents, in particular alcohol (such as beers, wines, and hard liquors), in food quickly dry out the mouth and cause bad breath. Drying agent is also present in mouthwashes, which can worsen bad breath; cigarettes are not food but have the same drying effect that creates bad breath.

Food Rich in Proteins: Dairy foods such as milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and so on can create bad breath; other foods such as beef, chicken, and fish are just as bad. People who cannot digest proteins in some beans will also experience bad breath.

Sugars: Sugar consumption can cause bad breath because sugar helps bacteria to reproduce and create sulfur compounds. In addition, other bacteria can take in the sugars and produce glycan strands, which result in plaque built-up and thus, tooth decays and gum diseases. This is true for breath refreshing mints, chewing gums, and candies that actually do more harm than help to curb bad breath.

Food High in Acid Content: Acids speed up bacteria production. Citrus juices, decaffeinated coffee, and even regular coffee contain acids; tea is okay. Highly acidic juices include tomato juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, and grapefruit juice.

Most of the food that cause bad breath could be temporary. However to maintain fresh breath, cut down on these foods; also use oral care products that are free of alcohol, sugar, and that have a high pH level and you will always have a broader smile!
