Help-bad,bad breath | Thyroid Disease

Question:

Hello, I need advise regarding my older cat who has extremely bad breath. His fur even smells after he has done some grooming. Had his teeth cleaned and this did nothing to remedy the situation. Have read a bit about gingivitis and the causes. Could this be? What else can cause this problem? Thanks for any reply.

Hi; The number one cause of bad breath is bad teeth/gums. Since your vet just cleaned the teeth (I am assuming that a full dental exam was done to rule out rotting teeth or gum disease (gingivitis) sounds like there is another problem here. You might want to have your vet do a screening for thyroid, liver and kidney and also check possible digestive tract problems. Good luck. Could be his food. Some cat foods are worse than others and really stink their breath up. John H

if you haven’t yet, ask your vet about it. mine told me bad breath was a sign of needing their teeth cleaned and gum disease. little_raven — “I don’t really like my job. This is an extremely late reply to your post – but if your cat’s breath has a really awful odor – like ammonia or nail polish remover, it is a sign of kidney failure – very common in older cats. Although you’d probably have noticed other signs of renal failure by now, too, if it smelled that horrendous. If his breath just plain stinks, but not of the above, then I’d still bring him to the vet to get other possibilities checked out & remedied.
