Bad breath causes

Bad breath is caused by a number of factors. Certain foods like onions and garlic are notorious culprits – once they’re digested, their oils take a journey through your bloodstream, into your lungs, and finally out through your mouth. Poor dental hygiene is an important factor in bad breath – by failing to brush and floss daily, particles build up, collect bacteria and turn into plaque. If the plaque remains long enough, it leads to tooth decay and periodontitis … and bad breath. Smoking and use of other tobacco products is an obvious cause. Dry mouth also causes halitosis – you may have noticed this in the morning. It’s due to decomposing cells (which are normally cleaned out by your saliva) collecting in your mouth while you sleep. Yuck!

Bad breath solutions

There are so many ways you can combat your stinky breath. Some short-term solutions include masking it by chewing on a stick of gum or sucking on hard candy. If you’re at a restaurant and there’s parsley on your plate, chewing on it can help hide what you’ve eaten. An apple a day keeps the dentist away – eating fruit can help dislodge any remnants of your meal still stuck to your teeth. Stay hydrated to avoid the bad breath that comes from a dry mouth. But if you’ve been suffering from chronic bad breath, you should assess your dental hygiene routine. Make sure you’re brushing after meals and flossing daily. See your dentist at least twice a year for a thorough cleaning and checkup.
