Post Nasal Drip Bad Breath
The problem with post nasal drip is that most people don’t really associate it with bad breath and would rarely think to treat their sinus problems to correct their bad breath problems. Usually, when a person thinks he or she has bad breath, he would concentrate on cleaning his teeth and tongue and buying new fresh breath products.
Bad breath from post nasal drip happens because there is a constant flow of mucus coming from the nasal cavities that drips down onto the back of the tongue. This mucus is full of protein and other components which provide an abundant food supply to the bacteria that cause bad breath. These anaerobic bacteria that feast on the mucus are usually found in the back of the tongue and make the drip build up their habitat.
It can be very exasperating if you have done all you can to ensure you have a clean mouth and there is still a smelly odor coming out of your mouth. Occasionally post nasal drip can be difficult to treat. Some people spend most of their lives treating this problem and only get minimal results. But fortunately even in these cases, post nasal drip can be decreased although not totally eliminated.
The short term solution for this type of bad breath is to clean your tongue several times a day, especially at the back of the tongue. Obviously, the best way to reduce post nasal drip bad breath is to decrease the amount of drip flowing into the back of the tongue. If your condition is occasional and minor, an over-the-counter medication can help. If you have chronic post nasal drip, you should consult a doctor to help you with this. Have your post nasal drip diagnosed and seek the proper treatment.
