The Halitosis Hack

Hydrogen PeroxideIf you suffer from a sinus infection, nasal inflammation or any other condition that results in post nasal drip, you know the annoying cough that can accompany it from the mucus produced. When there is excess mucus produced, it can irritate the throat as it travels down to the stomach. You can experience coughing fits and spasms, as well as the coating of your throat and the back of your tongue from mucus. Another side effect is that the mucus, coating the back of your throat and tongue where it is damp and warm, creates a very hospitable environment for bacteria which can cause halitosis.

Sinus infections, chronic sinusitis, allergies, or other inflammation whether caused by infection or not can create this excess mucus. While this may be treated by using over the counter remedies, there are some cases where such a condition, if it continues for several weeks, will require the attention of a doctor.

By taking steps to get rid of or lessen the mucus, you can also help to remove bad breath that can come with the mucus build up. Here are some ways you can reduce mucus and stop bad breath:

Reduce your intake of dairy foods: Dairy products all have a certain amount of fat. The fat in dairy products can thicken mucus, which will also make your cough worse and increase your likelihood of having halitosis. Switch to low-fat or non-fat milk, reduced-fat cottage cheese, low-fat or non-fat cheeses, and so on. THere are also many non-dairy substitutes available such as soy products. While eating these food may not completely stop mucus production, it can help to lessen the effect by reducing your cough and bad breath.

Be sure to drink plenty of water: By drinking plenty of water, you improve your health overall. Drink six to eight eight-ounce glasses of water per day, which helps thin excessive or thick mucus, which in turn helps to control your cough and reduce bad breath. Aside from the benefit to reducing your cough, drinking several glass of water each day can have an overall beneficial effect on your health, improve your oral health, as well as reduce bad breath by removing the bacteria causing it.

Consume less alcohol and caffeine: Sinus sufferers can benefit most from avoiding alcoholic beverages or those with caffeine such as soft drinks and coffee. These beverages have a dehydrating effect on the body, and thus preventing any thinning of the mucus.

Quit smoking: By smoking you continue to irritate your sinuses, which adds to the mucus problem. If you stop to help our sinus problem improve, make a contribution to your overall health and quit altogether, you will also suffer fewer sinus problems as well as other health issues.

Daily nasal wash: A nasal wash consists of saline solution rinsed through your sinuses. This will wash out some of the mucus and bacteria that are in your sinuses and causing postnasal drip, excessive mucus, and the cough and halitosis that result from that. You can buy saline packets at your local pharmacy, or make your own nasal wash as follows:

Homemade nasal wash solution
Add 1/2 teaspoon of non-iodized salt to 8 ounces of filtered or bottled water. (Non-iodized salt is less irritating, as is bottled or filtered water.) Mix thoroughly, and add a pinch of baking soda to the solution. Using a large rubber ear syringe, which can be purchases at your local drug store, fill it with the solution. Insert the tip of the syringe into one nostril, and squeeze, applying enough pressure to force the solution up into the sinuses. The solution will run out of the other nostril, so be sure to do this over your sink.

Repeat the same steps for your other nostril. After all the solution is used, blow your nose gently. Discard any leftover solution you may have.

You can repeat this nasal wash daily while you have a sinus problem, or use on a regular basis if you have chronic sinus trouble. Remember to prepare fresh solution each time, and rinse the syringe thoroughly after use.

IF you find that using a nasal wash does not provide relief, talk with your doctor to see if there are other options they would recommend, such as a prescription nasal steroid spray, which may help your sinus condition.
