Top 5 Ways to Combat Bad Breath

We’ve all been around people who have had bad breath before. It’s likely that you’ve had it at some point as well. Who amongst us hasn’t? It can be an extremely embarrassing situation and is one that most people take great strides to avoid. Is it any wonder why the space devoted to dental hygiene products is usually more than the space devoted to produce in your local grocery store?

Fortunately, there are steps that can be taken on top of proper dental care that can be taken to avoid bad breath. Here are the top 5 ways:

1. Stay Away From Deli Meats

Spicy meats like salami, pepperoni, and pastrami have oils they leave behind – sometimes for hours – after you eaten the sandwich. Where they are acidic in nature, they all promote bacteria and dry mouth, both of which cause bad breath. If you are going to be going into a situation where fresh breath is vital, stay away from these meats for at least 24 hours prior to your event.

2. Stay Away From Garlic

Sure, this is an obvious one, but many people don’t understand that garlic tastes and smells can linger for up to 24 hours, no matter how often you brush your teeth. Onions and hot peppers can have the same effect, so stay away from those as well.

3. Eat Yogurt

Studies have shown that the bacteria in yogurt actually help suppress levels of bad breath bacteria. The theory? The good bugs in yogurt force out the stink causing bacteria.

4. Hold Off On The Fish

Various types of fish – Tuna and anchovies to name two can linger on your breath for several hours after eating them.

5. Hold The Cheese, Please

If having clean breath is important to you, stay away from the “strong” cheeses like Camembert, Roquefort and blue cheese. These cheeses can cause you bad breath issues for several hours after eating them, regardless of how often you brush your teeth.

Being known as someone with bad breath can not only be embarrassing, but it really could end up costing you upward movement in your employment, not to mention your relationships. Follow these top 5 tips with regularity in conjunction with proper dental hygiene and you’ll not find yourself in this boat.
