Why Low-Carb Diets Cause Bad Breath (Halitosis)

The reasons to become a vegetarian are numerous. If you suffer from halitosis, you can add this to the list of reasons to make the switch. Following is why.

Halitosis, better known as bad breath, has a lot to do with the way our breath smells. To understand why, one must first understand the cause of bad

breath.

How Bad Breath is Formed

Bad breath is caused by bacteria growth in the mouth, a moist environment which is an ideal breeding ground for all type of bacteria. How does this bacteria cause bad breath?

As explained on animated-teeth.com, “Most of the odoriferous compounds that cause bad breath are waste products created by anaerobic bacteria as they digest proteins. . . . as we consume food items such as meat and fish that the bacteria that live in our mouths are getting a meal too, and the waste products from their meal are precisely the compounds that cause our bad breath.”

Now, imagine not only freshly consumed foods becoming fodder for odiferous-causing bacteria, but food left between our teeth after each meal. And, if you don’t brush, floss and scrape your tongue after each meal – and how many of us do that – the bacteria continue to feed.

Your Diet, Your Breath

According to the article, “Low-Carb Diets Can Cause Bad Breath, on WebMD.com, “Low-carb lifestyle junkies are more likely to suffer from a seldom discussed side effect of such diets — halitosis, aka bad breath. And since more than 25 million people say they have tried the Atkins diet (not to mention other low-carb eating plans), according to the National Marketing Institute, bad breath may be an epidemic!”

In fact, a study conducted by Dr. Atkins himself supported this.

So, why do low-carb diets cause bad breath?

Because low-carb diets restrict the number of carbs the body is ingesting, the body starts to use fat and other proteins as an energy source. As the body burns this fat, certain chemicals known as ketones, are released into the breath. This fat-burning process (ketosis), common in low-carb diets produces an offending breath odor.
